Assertive v. aggressive debate

I am standing in a cue when I hear two people raising their voice at each other. My friend says to me 'one was being aggressive as she tried to push in' 'But - I replied- I heard her explain she was trying to catch up with her partner...' I guess you could look at this either way. Personally I think if she clearly and politely explained her need she was not being aggressive but rather assertive. The point is, sometimes we have a need that we are not prepared to compromise with although it may impact others. This happens especially at work but also in other circumstances. In those cases we will need to say clearly but politely what our needs are and how we feel about a certain situation. We also need to give the other person a chance to say ' their piece' and be prepared to discuss it. If however we raise our voice or react in a unfriendly manner, that becomes aggressive behaviour as we communicate to others that we do not value their ideas or their needs. The difference is quite clear to me and In the case above I believe to other observers too.

Welcome to the first ever Everydaymentor blog!

Hello!

So finally this is my first blog for Everydaymentor and I am sooo excited!
First let me briefly introduce myself...Alessandra, your Everyday Mentor...So what do I mean by that? I decided to call this blog Everydaymentor because really this is what I am. I love to help others develop, grow and turn their dreams into reality. I find there is nothing more rewarding than seeing somebody's face lit up with excitement at having identified what is right for them. This could be a career pathway, a skill, a goal, or indeed self-confidence and self-belief....For me, it is all about empowering individuals to achieve their potential and supporting organisations to get the most out of their people in whatever way is right for them.  You may wonder why I have used the term 'Everyday'...the answer is, because everyday things are simple, approachable but often can make the difference in our lives. So I really hope that in time when you read my blogs you will find I have made a little a difference to your day!

But what will I 'mentor' about in my blogs? Business, entrepreneurship, career and women, and what it takes to be successful and fulfilled, whatever your definition of success. These are the things I am passionate about and have a personal and professional interest in. I will write about my experience, my observations and my learning, but I will also share what many generous people I meet are prepared to make available to myself and my readers.

I really hope you will want to be involved, send me comments and feedback through the comment box or by emailing me. I also hope we will meet sometimes soon at an event....Please check the news page for that!

My pledge is to be honest, respectful, helpful and engaging to the best of my capability. I also hope you will reciprocate.

Here is to many happy blogs!
